Two and a half feet!

Just a quick note to report on this week's one-year physical checkup. Fern passed with flying colors and all her stats are in pretty much the same deciles as before: 75th percentile height, 90th percentile weight, and somewhere just over the chart lines for head size. So, at 30.5 inches, Fern has crossed the two-and-a-half foot mark for good!

Many of you will remember the friend in the photo as our former roommate (and wedding cake designer) Laurel, who still comes over to hang with the family every week or so and also blogs all about her gourmet lifestyle, here.

Birthday recap

Far too many photos to put on one page... click here for the whole birthday slide show. I'm also missing quite a few because they were taken by other people... could you e-mail your photos if you've got them? Thanks!

Phew! What a birthday -- we're still recovering! In all the hustle and the bustle, I left a few fun bits out of the blog, so I thought I'd just catch up a little.

First off, as you may know, Fern's birthday comes the day after Uncle Greg's, so when he and Grandma Linda arrived we had a little celebration. Fern was asleep for the cake part, unfortunately, but we did spend some time practicing "blowing out the candles" for her big moment to come. (For the record, Fern did not blow out her own candle. I swung her around to set up an air current, but even that didn't really work!)

Grandma Joan and "Papa" Gary had a fun day with Fern when they arrived from the airport, warming up from a somewhat sleepy and whiny car ride. (We picked them up in a Zipcar since we've pared down to just one car at home now, and Fern still wasn't really used to it... and silly daddy forgot her water bottle to boot!) Among other things, they got to see the Christmas wagon put to good use as Fern got some walking practice in.

On the birthday day itself, Fern got all dressed up (we hardly ever get to wear dresses!) and was celebrated by Greg, Linda, Gary, Joan, and, of course, Uncle Ken and Aunt Jewel. She had a bite of her first birthday cake, although it was hard to tell if she liked it. (Judge for yourself from the picture!) Kristin created a Krispy Kreme cake, much like our wedding cake, except this time with a butterfly-and-fern theme, just as if you'd been strolling along a forest creek and happened to discover a patch of the elusive doughnut mushroom.

As mentioned above, I'm short on photos from the birthday, so please send me any more you've got! For now, here's a link to the whole set.

First steps!

Well, it's finally happened: we've got official, repeatable steps! Just before her birthday, too. Go, girl!

Learning to clap!

We have contact! Note the extreme concentration as Fern brings those hands together to the beat, adding one more musical instrument to her repertoire! (If you're keeping score, that means virtuosa Fern now plays the: piano, thigh, wood blocks, cat, hands, guitar, wooden spoon, bells, belly, file cabinet, cardboard box, and, of course, oboe.)

(OK, just kidding about that last one.)

Fernie Four-Tooth

Fern's got four teeth! There was a bad day or so while that last one cut through (the upper right, visible here!), but we are now officially a symmetrical square, two incisors on top and two on the bottom.

milestones

Another post by Kristin... with video!

I thought it about time that I make another appearance ... I've been struggling with finding the time to sit down to write and to find the right words to capture my reactions to our latest milestones.

I've been back at work now for nearly 4 months---I would say that I've "adjusted," but it's really more of an ongoing process rather than a place of arrival. With each milestone, whether it be Fern's birth or the introduction of solid foods (featured here in this video), I find myself both elated and grieving at the same time. Each new step means that she is becoming more independent of me---which is healthy and wonderful, yet a little part of me misses the depth of her dependence (Mom, as you read this, I bet you're thinking, "yeah, imagine how I felt when you moved all the way to California!").

As you can see, Fern throws herself into each experience---as I witness her exuberance, I often find myself thinking, "I want to be like Fern when I grow up!" I am a better person by virtue of being her mom; she's teaching me profound lessons about life and living.

July 11, 2006: First solid food!

solid food

Fern wants the grilled cheese

We started getting the idea that Fern was interested in our food by the way she watched us intently every time we ate. In the photo (sorry it's a little small; click to see it bigger), she's grabbing insistently at Kristin's grilled cheese sandwich.

here it comes! So, we've been introducing Fern slowly to solid foods, one new item each week per our pediatrician's advice. She started off with rice cereal, which she's a fan of, as you can tell. (The first meal was on July 11th, for those of you keeping score!) Now she's up to banana moosh, and we'll start on sweet potato soon!

Sometimes Fern is so intent on getting her new and beloved food that she'll go so far as to lick the tray!

there's some more food, right there! yuuuummmm!

tummy time!

For the first time today, F.E. actually got excited about her tummy time! Whether it's because infants are all put down to sleep on their backs these days, as some say, or for her own unfathomable reasons, Fern has generally objected to being placed on her belly, even when we provide entertainments and distractions aplenty. We've been practicing for weeks, holding her on her belly, or letting her use a pillow or a rolled blanket to help her prop up a bit, but she still showed no real enthusiasm until today. Yay!

There are quite a few photos of this particular success (way too many, probably); we've been working on this for a long time!

first dinner out

As you probably know, Kristin and I really love to eat out at some of San Francisco's finest restaurants. The finest of the fine, of course, is our local bistro, Le Metro Café. The idea of going out in the middle of a potential "witching hour," though, was a little daunting. But if we're going to bite the bullet anywhere, it should be at the Metro, where we've become something of a regular fixture. So, with Sven in tow, we headed down the block so grandpa Alan & grandma Laura could buy us all dinner... what's the worst that could happen?

Nothing bad, it turns out! We had a wonderful dinner, with Fern even taking an active interest in what was around her for a little while after her own feeding (right at the table!). I can tell as I write these words that for those of you who are parents this will seem like no great feat -- I mean, you go out with your babies all the time, right? But for us, it felt like a real accomplishment that we'll have to repeat! Now that we know that we can go out, the sky's the limit, right?
